CARDIFF -- Determined to make a fast start in the defence of its Six Nations title, Wales selected a 32-man squad crammed with experience for its opening match against Italy. The Welsh won their second straight title in 2013, but only after losing 30-22 at home to Ireland in the first round. That experience looks to have swayed coach Warren Gatlands thinking, with the New Zealander going with the tried and tested and deciding against picking any new faces. "We were a little bit slow starting last year and we know we need to start well on Feb. 1," Gatland said on Tuesday. "Weve picked a pretty experienced squad and kept it fairly tight at this stage." Centre Jonathan Davies was included, even though he will miss the first three rounds with a chest injury sustained during the November test series. Sam Warburton also hasnt played since the autumn internationals because of a shoulder injury but is named as captain. Gethin Jenkins is one of the props, although there are concerns over the state of his knee after he was injured in Cardiffs loss to Toulon in the Heineken Cup at the weekend. The Welsh are aiming to become the first team to win three straight Six Nations. "We have got an opportunity to create history and that is something we will focus on and something that will give us extra motivation," said Gatland, who handed over the reins to assistant Rob Howley for the 2013 tournament while he concentrated on his role as British Lions coach. "We have got the three games at home and two tough away games but when we won the Grand Slam in 2008 and 2012 we had these fixtures so we know it can be done." Wales away games are against Ireland and England. ------ Wales: Forwards: Paul James, Gethin Jenkins, Ryan Bevington, Richard Hibbard, Ken Owens, Emyr Phillips, Adam Jones, Samson Lee, Rhodri Jones, Alun Wyn Jones, Luke Charteris, Ian Evans, Andrew Coombs, Ryan Jones, Justin Tipuric, Sam Warburton (captain), Toby Faletau, Dan Lydiate, Aaron Shingler. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Greg Hardy did not practice with the Panthers and left the stadium in street clothes with his agent Drew Rosenhaus while awaiting a decision on his playing status regarding his domestic violence case. Panthers coach Ron Rivera was 20 minutes late arriving to practice and said that Hardy would not participate in workouts as he walked past reporters. Rivera didnt say whether he had spoken with Hardy, if he would play Sunday night against Pittsburgh or if he had been placed on the exempt-commissioners permission list, which would entail the Pro Bowl defensive end being deactivated until the case is resolved. Hardy was convicted July 15 of assault on a female and communicating threats. He is appealing the ruling and a jury trial is set for Nov. 17. With security around the stadium amped up, Hardy and Rosenhaus emerged from the teams facility, stepped into the players Bentley and drove away. Earlier, two police officers on motorcycles guarded the entrance to the teams practice facility. Hardy had been scheduled to practice Wednesday. Rivera said in a press conference Monday that Hardy would continue to practicing and attending team meetings this week but called the situation "very fluid." The coach also said at that time that the Panthers hadnt decided on whether Hardy would be allowwed to play Sunday night.dddddddddddd That was before the Minnesota Vikings did an about face early Wednesday and placed Adrian Peterson on the commissioners exempt list amid public pressure and concerned sponsors. Hardy, who was tagged as the teams franchise player this off-season and signed a one-year, $13.1 million deal, is Carolinas top pass rusher. He earns more than $770,000 each week during the regular season. He tied a franchise record with 15 sacks last season and has 26 in in his last 32 games. Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and general manager Dave Gettleman have been repeatedly turned down interview requests during the Hardy ordeal, instead allowing all information to come through Rivera. Rivera said Monday that Gettleman and his staff are "doing their due diligence in terms of looking at what our options are" going forward. He also indicated at the time the league was involved in the process. Rivera also said Monday the Panthers are trying to be careful not to be reactionary. "That is why we have to sit down and talk about these things," Rivera said. "And we did the same thing (on Sunday). We talked about a lot of things and at the end of the day I had to make a decision that I believe was in the best interest of our football team and for Greg." ' ' '
